A helping profession is one that nurtures the growth of or addresses the problems of a persons physical, psychological, intellectual, emotional or spiritual well-being. At this stage of my life Social Work is what I am most interested in practicing because it provides opportunities for me to work in many different settings with people whose problems, issues and needs are diverse. My second choice would then be guidance counseling which is the process of helping individuals discover and develop their educational, vocational, and psychological potentialities and thereby achieve an optimal level of personal happiness and social usefulness. I am interested in the helping profession because I have a strong desire to help others in difficult†¦show more content†¦According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary justice is ‘the maintenance or administration of what is just especially by the impartial adjustment of conflicting claims or the assignment of merited rewards or punishments.’ Oxford dictionary states it as ‘just behavior or treatment.’ Wikipedia says ‘The Western notion of justice is a concept of moral rightness based on ethics, rationality, law, natural law, religion or equity. It is also the act of being just and/or fair.’ Whatever the various definitions of justice are, as a social worker my work should be aimed at providing justice for my clients whenever the situation arises. Being a personal value of mine, justice can both advance and hinder my work. It can advance my work because of the drive and belief I have in its execution. I will be motivated to go beyond the call of duty to ensure that justice is served and I will be empowered to stand up for what is right and fair. However, how far beyond the call of duty I go can hinder my work. If I let my personal views of justice get the better of me I can end up going too far in my intentions and make the case even worse than it was. It is the duty of the heath care workers to learn the local language of an area, which will help communication better. The only way around this will be the health individuals to be from the local area or the health personnel to learn the local language. It will enable healthcare workers to deliver the health process to the local individuals. The other barrier may be the cultural gap (Hewitt, 2012). There are many local false beliefs among local people of an area, they prevent the application to modern medical treatment techniques. The local people may prefer the use of the cultural way of treatment rather that the modern treatment. In such cases it is important to ensure that the awareness among the local people about the benefits of modern medical treatment process is raised, which will help them to accept the advanced forms of treatment (Hewitt, 2012). There still is a significant difference in the rural and urban style of living, and the trans-global progression has not yet been successful in eradicating the challenges of living in rural belts. There are several factors that contribute to the lack of privileges in rural living and all these factors have affected the quality and standard of health care in such sectors. Studies suggest that about 20 % of total American population resides in the rural belts of United States and less than even 10% of physicians practice in these (Gulliford Morgan, 2013). Inevitably, these disparities have led to alarmingly high rates of mortality in rural belts when compared to urban areas. The first limitation to delivering optimum health care facilities to rural communities can be the geographical restrictions, the difficulty in accommodation being the vital element of it. Majority of health care professional avoid commuting to rural areas due to daunting distance, severe climatic fluctuation, scanty modes of transportation and sometimes treacherous road conditions. Similarly, the rural residents are restricted to access better health care options due to these restrictions (Clark Paraska, 2014). The lack of general awareness can also contribute to the limited access to quality health care and this is in most cases fed by superstitions and illiteracy. Various medical procedures demand extensive protocol and documentation necessities that the lack of awareness or general health education can pose restrictions to (Vedio et al., 2017). Language can also prove to be a huge constraint; native communities are often not much adept with English and they communication gap can become fatal when discussing health care. Mediclaims have become an integral element in the health care industry in the last decade; and almost all the people in the urban areas are under the coverage of this Mediclaims (Heaman et al., 2015). Health insurances are carefully curated marketing tools that allow individuals to avail the best health care, which offers medical service without burning hole in the pocket. However, the rural community often miss out on the opportunities of a nice health benefit plan. When poverty and unemployment paves way for chronic illnesses and malnutrition, investing in a health plan becomes a luxury that they cannot afford (Vedio et al., 2017). The lack of infrastructure in rural health care facilities is also a major reason for the alarmingly increasing mortality rates. All the above-mentioned barriers have accumulated brick by brick and have destroyed the health care standards of the rural belts. However, with effort and careful planning some of these barriers can be successfully. The communicational apprehension can be overcome by implementation of some contemporary comprehension strategies. Firstly, there is need for the physicians to volunteer to practice in rural areas, the lack of clinical practitioners leads to a lot of untimely deaths in these regions and that cannot go on forever (Heaman et al., 2015). The rural areas need to be better connected to provide easy access to health care, and that can only be achieved by government intervention (Antheunis Tates Nieboer, 2013). The insurance companies must attempt to include the rural communities as well which will ensure expansion of their target market and allow the rural residents the privilege of better health care. To overcome the communicational apprehension several strategies can be implemented. The massive barrier to communication gap in case of health care is the language; periodic health care workshops can gradually eliminate these problems (Gulliford Morgan, 2013). This will not only ease the communicational apprehension but also improve general health literacy and hygiene awareness in the rural community. Social support Non Government Organizations can take responsibility of frequent workshops which will contribute to improved health conditions in the rural areas and eradicate malnutrition. Including deserving local candidates into such programs will also aid in reducing unemployment and will help in diminishing the dialect issue (Vedio et al., 2017). The health care has advanced significantly in the past few years and the contemporary techniques have replaced the conventional methods. The older generation might not be as receptive to the contemporary technologies as the young generation is ought to. The health care professionals must consider the generation gap and strategize their moves accordingly (Syed, Gerber Sharp, 2013). It might prove to be challenging to explain to an elderly the attributes of modern medical equipment and age based rationing (Gulliford Morgan, 2013). However, the young generation will be more responsive of the modern technologies and their benefits. Nevertheless, it is important to provide training to the people, which will help them to better imply the latest form of technology in the medical department (Vedio et al., 2017). It should be considered that health care is a necessity of human life, not a commodity to be purchased depending on socio-economic status. Reading Reaction Reading Reaction on "The Lesson" The short story "The Lesson" by Toni Cade Bambara is about a group of relatively young children who live in the same neighborhood and are mentored by an educated woman who also lives in their neighborhood. The setting for most of the story takes place on Fifth Avenue in the well-known toy store called F.A.O. Schwartz. The woman, Miss Moore, attempted to teach the children about the concept of "true/real money" and was able to do so with giving the main character, Sylvia, five dollars to pay the cab driver and asked her to do the math and give the driver a ten percent tip. After some chatter and discussion between the children and Miss Monroe, there was something taught to them, at least some of them. Without revealing the ending, there is definitely a lesson learned, as the title of the story would suggest. "The Lesson" has an array of characters that include children called Flyboy, Sugar, Junebug, Mercedes, Q.T., Rosie Giraffe, Big Butt, and Sylvia. The story is told from Sylvia's perspective and it can be assumed that she is not very old based on her vernacular and thought process; Sylvia is probably between the ages of eight and ten. She, being the main character, is considered to be the protagonist and her mentor, Miss Moore, is the antagonist. An antagonist is most often described as the villain or the opposing person within the plot. Some infamous antagonists come from fictional stories like the Joker (who is Batman's arch nemesis), Darth Vader (the evil one in Star Wars), or Lord Voldemort (from the Harry Potter series). What can confuse someone about the antagonist is that they may assume it is the character with bad intentions. However, in cases like the story of Deadpool, the protagonist has bad intentions or more of a villain-like character, but since he is the main character, he cannot be the antagonist. Miss Moore is not evil, but she does challenge Sylvia. With that, and the fact that Sylvia is the protagonist, Miss Moore is the antagonist. Miss Moore challenges Sylvia in many ways, but they are all strictly concerned with education, whether that be school subjects or real-life aspects. The first incident that Sylvia talks about is when Miss Moore asks the kids if they knew what real money is as opposed to monopoly money. Sylvia was turned off by that and even sounded offended because of course they knew what money was. Sylvia said, "And Miss Moore asking us do we know what money is like we a bunch of retards," (Bambara, 1972, p. 16). This sets a premise for the moral of the story in which is revealed towards the end of the story. Another question that Miss Moore posed to the children was asking if they had a desk at home to use. Some of them pipe in and say that they do or that they do not, but she attempts to explain how it's important to have a personal work space. Unfortunately, Flyboy interrupted, and she could not finish what she was going to say, however it was leading into something presumably deep. Sylvia, being the young impressionable child that she is, is easily susceptible to teachings by anyone, let alone an educated adult such as Miss Moore. The protagonist vs antagonist relationship in the short story, "The Lesson" is clearly a mentor/mentee relationship between Sylvia and Miss Moore.

However, another assassin learns of the wrong and prevents him from this great misdeed. It is at this point that the call to adventure occurs. Rachel tells him that Joe Chill had critical information about Gotham City’s worst drug baron – Carmine Falcone. He, alongside other hardcore drug lords, was terrorizing the city. They were the real problem, and if Bruce only killed Chill then he would be ex erting revenge. Rachel asserted that true justice occurred when hardcore criminal elements like Falcone were captured. Bruce thus realized that Falcone was responsible for the city’s decay. He needed to deal with this man and others like him in order to restore sanity in Gotham (IMBD 18). In most films, the refusal to call occurs shortly after the call, and Batman Begins is not an exception (Vogler 7). Bruce confronts Falcone at his underground bar and gets beaten by his employees. At this point, he escapes into China where he steals and infiltrates into the criminal underworld. It seems as though the last place one would fight Gotham’s ills would be in China, which was miles away from his home place. Furthermore, he appeared lost and confused when he made this escape. Bruce then enters the fourth phase of the hero’s journey by meeting with his mentor. This happens when he goes back home and gets introduced to Lucius Fox. However, when he first confronts Sergeant Jim Gordon, the story begins to take off from there. Shortly after this phase, Mr. Wayne then enters into the tests and allies stage of the hero’s journey. This occurs when he does his first heroic deed. Falcone is unloading his drug shipments from a cargo ship; Bruce causes his allies to disappear, ties up Falcone, and disarms the thugs (IMBD 23). At this point, one learns that the hero’s key enemies are the drug dealers, with Falcone as the key suspect. Corrupt police officers such as Arnold Flass are also his adversaries. Conversely, Officer Gordon is his key ally in law enforcement as he is a just officer. Batman Begins’ sixth phase of the hero’s journey takes place much earlier than one would anticipate (Vogler 20). Batman’s biggest fear is that of bats. It reminds him of his parents’ death and the depression that followed thereafter. When he is back in the League of Shadows, Bruce inhales smoke that causes him to have delusions about bats. It was at this point that the individual overcomes the phobia, fights Ducard. and wins the sword fight. When he gets back home, he chooses the bat symbol in order to reflect this inner fear. He wanted his enemies to experience the same terror that the bats elicited in him. The Supreme Ordeal occurs when Ra’s plans on destroying the city using the microwave transmitter. Batman tries to stop him by engaging with him in the train. There are four League of Shadows members who seem to outnumber and beat Bruce. However, he manages to overcome them but has to deal with the paranoid residents of the city. As Batman enters into the train where Ra’s is located, one gets the sense that things are only going downhill from there. This explosion also got rid of Ra’s who had become a source of turmoil in the film. Batman’s ability to come out of this situation proved that he was a hero worth his salt. The ninth phase of the journey, which is seizing the sword, occurs shortly after beating Ra’s. Bruce talks to Rachel and reconciles with her. She has now learnt that Bruce and Batman are one and the same. Furthermore, she realizes that she had misjudged Bruce’s character on the basis of his drunken escapades (IMBD 41). This scene ends with the promise of a reunion that could occur when Batman seizes to exist. Vogler explains that a kiss and some wise words are typical in this case. This was true for Batman Begins because she stresses how Batman’s cowl is Bruce’s real identity. When some evil force s pursue the hero after the seizing-the-sword phase, then this becomes the road back. One may argue that no such phase took place in the film. After Bruce destroyed his adversaries, he only meets with members of Wayne Enterprises as well as Alfred and Sergeant Gordon. No high-octane action scene follows after his victory (Vogler 26). However, one may also argue that the road-back phase occurs in a mild form through the person of William Earle. He shows up at the Enterprise ready to take on leadership of the corporation. Nonetheless, this chase ends as soon as it begins when William Earle learns that Bruce bought most of the stocks on offer and he has majority control over the enterprise. The eleventh phase of the hero’s journey is the transformation, which Vogler called the resurrection phase. At this point, Bruce realizes that he is pertinent to the success of Gotham City. He has also learnt about staying true to himself as well as the need to believe in himself. At the begi nning of his adventure, Bruce was not sure he could take down such a powerful force as the drug underworld, but through cooperation with his friends, he proved that he could. In Batman Begins, the last part of the film, which is the return phase, occurs when Bruce uses the experiences he encountered with Ra’s and Falcone to become a better superhero. He knows that criminals are not to be underestimated as they can use as much technology as he does. Gordon highlights this aspect, but Batman seems unfettered by it. The log will help me detect when I am doing too little and when I need to slow down and invite feedback on my writing progress. Listening to some music in the background while I write is one of the writing rituals that I have developed. Music helps me counter the fright that comes with seeing a blank page in front me waiting for me to start writing. For that purpose we developed two questionnaire ( for customers and dealers ). We have conducted personal survey method. The main qualities of this survey method are as fellows: 1. The most important features of this method is that it leads towards high participation. Moreover, in personally interview the interview can carry with additional information’s. 2. The props and visual aids can also enhance the vision of knowledge of interviewer. The interviewer has more control over the personal interview than other interrogation types. 3. Two common costing systems used in business are traditionally cost accounting system (job costing, process costing and operating costing) and activity-based costing system (ABC). There are some similarities and differences between these systems. Regarding the similarities, both accumulate product costs throughout the production process and assign those costs to individual units of production. Additionally, product cost under two costing systems consists of direct materials, direct labor and manufacturing overhead. In terms of differences, they are different in the way how the overhead costs are allocated. For conventional costing, it assigns manufacturing overhead based on a single volume based cost driver such as direct labour hours. In contrast, ABC approaches cost from the perspective that products do not cause costs. It requires activities which are the causes of all costs incurred so it allocates manufacturing overhead according to the activities needed to produce the products. Therefore, it highlights the existence of non value added activity which is not existed under traditional method. ABC also differs from conventional costing in the use of several cost pools when allocating the overhead costs. For instance, traditional costing uses only one cost pool to distribute the overhead whereas there are many cost pools involved under ABC. Furthermore, ABC employs both volume-based and non-volume-based cost drivers while conventional costing utilizes only volume-based cost drivers. Another difference is that conventional approach complies with the GAAP so it can be used to satisfy conventional financial reporting requirements. On the other hand, accounting standard board does not accept ABC to prepare financial statements so it can be useful for internal management decision. Under conventional system, there are similarities between job costing, process costing and operating costing. Firstly, they accumulate product costs throughout the production process and assign those costs to products. Secondly, these costing systems calculate the product costs which comprise direct material, direct labour and manufacturing overhead. Lastly, the cost flows for three systems is from raw material to work in process to finished goods and then to costs of goods sold. These first two systems can be distinguished by the following differences. First, job costing system is used by the company which produces unique products or products based on customer orders. Conversely, process costing is for the firms which produce one or a few homogenous products and often have continuous mass production. Second, each individual product costs are traced easily under job costing while process costing makes no attempt to track individual product costs. Thirdly, under job costing, the transfer from one job to another does not take place whereas the production from one process is transferred to next one till the product is full completed under process costing. Next, process costing accumulates product costs in each production department throughout the period while job order costing accumulates product costs to specific units. Operating costing for company which has a mix production system that produces in large quantities but then is customized the finished product. Therefore, operating costing is a combination of process costing and job costing. However, it differs from job and process costing which includes more than two types of cost pools in overhead allocation process. The cost pools are designed to match the separate processes that may be allocated to batches of products. Animal testing involves hurting and painful procedures which include the injection of poisonous chemicals, the cutting of their abdomen, and the stressing of their bones until they break, and similar other procedures. All these p ainful acts are performed without anesthesia being administered. Scientists argue that anesthesia often interferes with the accuracy of their results. For which reason, they have no qualms about subjecting these animals to intolerable pain. Painful experiments on animals can make most people uncomfortable. For many years, much controversy has surrounded the practice of animal testing, and the subject of primates subjected to testing has been one of the core issues of this controversy (Conn, et.al., 2008). On one side, humans relate more to primates, more than any other animals and therefore, their eagerness on the use of such primates for experimentation is strong (Conn, et.al., 2008). The feelings of kinship with primates have often animal rights groups to express their protests against animal cruelty and testing. Those involved in primate testing however argue that these experiments are necessary in order to establish cures for diseases and the fact that primates have more in comm on anatomically to humans, make them the best candidate for experimentation (Guerrini, 2003). There are however inherent issues which are bound with this practice. It is evident that animals experience cruel and inhuman treatments through some of the experiments carried out on them. In some of these experiments, they are often forced to ingest household products and are then monitored to observe the results. Further, in other experiments, animals are often forced to ingest medicines before these medications are put into market. These experiments are carried out in order to ensure that they do not have any life-threatening side effects on human beings. To test corrosive chemicals, chemicals are often applied on the shaved backs of the animals and these chemicals expectedly burn the skins of these animals, often causing them much agony and pain (Larry, 2004 p145). According to the scientists, animals and human beings have a similar biological structure. This is a fragile foundation to base an argument on. Not only the revenue has surpassed the RM200 million mark for the first time in HSIBs history, profit before tax hit a record high of RM21 million for the financial year ended 31 December, 2008 increased from preceding year corresponding period of RM6 million by a hefty RM15 million or 250%. The Groups record profit is respectable indeed, considering a challenging operating environment in which high cost pressures are the order of the day in better part of the year. By keeping close momentum with volatile movement of major material prices, the Group has promptly reacted with cost recovery exercises in February 2008 and again in June 2008 to protect the margin. Nevertheless, prices for most of the key input materials were falling from historical high towards the end of third quarter impacted by fear of global recession as a result of credit crunch. The continued efforts to enhance operating efficiency within the Group have also contributed greatly towards the bottom line of the year, best ever achieved in the Groups history. Revenue rose by 14% to RM220 million as compared with preceding year corresponding period of RM193 million amid a lower production volume. The increase was largely due to selected price adjustments necessitated by the steep increases in raw material costs. The Group has no borrowings and has a cash balance of RM21 million as at the end of the financial year. OUTLOOK AND PROSPECTS Malaysia economic expansion disappeared in fourth quarter 2008 and it barely remained above water with a negligible growth of 0.1 % that led a full year growth of 4.6% as compared to 6.3% of 2007. The slower growth was due to the worsening global economy that had caused a significant drop in the countrys exports. The global economy is getting more critical and all signs indicate deeper and prolonged recession. Any improvement will hinge on the state of development in the US and other bigger economies in the world. The countrys grossdomestic product forecast for this year has been revised downwards to between -1% and 1%, from 3.5% earlier. The management expects 2009 to be another very challenging year for the Group in view of growing global economic uncertainty. In this environment, the Groups strategy remains focused on product and service quality, flawless operation and cost control. At the same time, the Group will continue to look for ways to sustain its competitive position whil e remaining focused on operational efficiency so that satisfactory results are achieved in the coming year. He became a member of the Board of Directors on 4 October, 1991 and was appointed as the Managing Director on 3 August, 2000. Subsequently, he is redesignated as Chairman on 1 February, 2003. He was the Deputy Managing Director of Hup Seng Perusahaan Makanan (M) Sdn. Bhd. (HSPM) on 13 October, 1974 and then the Managing Director of the same on 1 April, 1977. He was appointed as the Deputy Managing Director on 21 April, 1977 and subsequently the Vice Chairman of Hup Seng Hoon Yong Brothers Sdn. Bhd. (HSHY) on 1 January, 1990. He is the brother of Kuo Choo Song and Kerk Chiew Siong, and uncle of Kerk Chian Tung, Teo Lee Teck and Kerk Kar Han. His family relationship with shareholders of HSB Group Sdn. Bhd. (major shareholder of Hup Seng Industries Berhad (HSIB)) is disclosed in page 12 of this Annual Report. He does not have any conflict of interest with the Company except for certain recurrent related party transactions of revenue or trading nature that is necessary for day-to-day operations of the Group. He has no convictions for any offences over the past 10 years. As one of the founders of H up Seng Co., he has approximately 50 years of experience in the biscuits industry. He plans the Groups strategic business development and production development which includes the installation of various production facilities in the Groups factory and heads the research and development team which researches new varieties of biscuits. He contributed in obtaining the Certification of HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) BRC (British Retail Consortium) for HSPM in year 2008, to ensure that product safety and quality are in line with global standard. He travels abroad extensively to keep abreast with the latest developments in the biscuits manufacturing industry and to assess new market prospects for the Group. Kerk Chiew Siong Kerk Chiew Siong, Malaysian aged 56, became a member of the Board of Directors on 4 October, 1991 and was appointed as an Executive Director on 3 August, 2000. His position as Executive Director was redesignated to Non-Executive Director on 1 February, 2003. On 17 August, 2006, he then became the Non-Executive Vice Chairman of the Company. He was appointed as the Director of HSPM on 12 March, 1981 and then as an Executive Director on 1 January, 1990 before being redesignated as Vice Chairman on 1 February, 2003. He was a Director of HSHY on 15 February, 1988 and then became the Deputy Managing Director of the same on 1 January, 1990 before being redesignated as Executive Director on 1 February, 2003. He has no convictions for any offences over the past 10 years. He has more than 33 years of experience in the manufacturing and marketing of biscuits. As head of the Quality Assurance and Business Development Department, he is responsible for devising strategies for market development and researching the potentials of the Groups products in existing as well as new markets. He also ensures the Groups biscuits manufacturing quality control system meets the MS ISO9001:2000 requirements. Kuo Choo Song Kuo Choo Song, Malaysian aged 77, is the Managing Director of the Company. He became a member of the Board of Directors on 4 October, 1991 and was appointed as the Executive Chairman of the Company on 3 August, 2000. Subsequently, he is redesignated as Managing Director in HSIB on 1 February, 2003. He had been a member of the Audit Committee until 12 December, 2007. He was appointed as the Managing Director of HSPM on 13 October, 1974 and as the Chairman of the same since 1 April, 1977. He was subsequently redesignated as Vice Chairman of HSPM on 1 February, 2003. He has been the Chairman of HSHY since 21 April, 1977. He has over 50 years of experience in the biscuits industry at management and board levels. He is one of the founders of Hup Seng Co. which was established in 1958 and subsequently became HSPM in 1974. He is the elder brother of Keh (Kerk) Chu Koh and Kerk Chiew Siong, and uncle of Kerk Chian Tung, Teo Lee Teck and Kerk Kar Han. His family relationship with shareholders of HSB Group Sdn. Bhd. (major shareholder of HSIB) is disclosed in page 12 of this Annual Report. PRICE/EARNINGS RATIO The price/earnings ratio is a measure of the price paid for a share relative to the annual net income or profit earned by the firm per share. In year 2004, the price/earnings ratio for Hup Seng Industries Berhad is 0.13 times and increases by 0.05 times to 0.18 times in year 2005. The price/earnings ratio decreases back to 0.13 times in year 2006. However, the price/earnings ratio has been increases by 0.03 times again to 0.16 times in 2007.
